It’s Easy to Confuse Them
If you find yourself a bit confused about mindfulness and meditation, I can’t say that I blame you. Mindfulness is everywhere these days, and the words mindfulness and meditation seem to increasingly be blending together.
Apps, articles, cute little cartoon characters, celebrities reading you sleep stories (which is neither mindfulness nor meditation)…even your health insurance company is probably sending you articles about mindfulness and mindfulness meditation classes.
So it’s super easy to confuse “mindfulness” with “meditation” and begin thinking of them as being the same thing.
However, while they’re both very helpful, sometimes even transformative, they are not the same thing.
Mindfulness exists outside of meditation and meditation can take many forms beyond just mindfulness. This includes cosmic energy meditation.
Not All Meditation Is Mindfulness
Here at QuietSelf, our focus is on cosmic energy and cosmic energy meditation.
Although its roots are as old as those of mindfulness meditation, the concept of cosmic energy is new to many people. So I thought I’d take a moment to explain what it is and how it works. And maybe you’ll want to check it out for yourself.
First, to help make clear the differences between them, I’ll define mindfulness and mindfulness meditation, and then I’ll define cosmic energy and cosmic energy meditation.
My hope is that by separating the components, you’ll more fully understand what cosmic energy and cosmic energy meditation are, and how this transformative style of meditation might be what you’ve you’ve been searching for.
As Rumi said, the thing you seek is also seeking you.
When Is Meditation Mindfulness Meditation?
Mindfulness is conscious focus on the present moment and only the present moment. It’s a continually renewing commitment to gently but consistently quieting the chatty mind. A technique that helps you let go of attachment to your thoughts, mindfulness allows you to teach yourself to not ruminate obsessively on whatever chatty nonsense the mind calls up. The goal, if there is a goal, falls under the header of tranquility and peace of mind.
Meditation, on the other hand, is the introspective practice of focusing the mind on one thing. It’s a word that’s also sometimes used to describe deep inner reflection, either on a concept or an aspect of one’s self and/or behaviors. It’s a mental and physical practice of experience. If it seeks to do anything, we might call it personal evolvement. But sometimes meditation is just an extended moment of inner quietude, a reflective pause in your day, devoted to one thought that has great meaning to you.
So, putting these two words together, mindfulness meditation is a practice of allowing the mind to become quiet with a single focus for a set period of time. It uses what are called anchors – such as a single candle flame, a lotus flower, or most commonly, the breath of your own body coming in and going out. Focus on the chosen anchor allows the chatty mind to become manageable as you notice it and then let go of noticing it as you bring focus back solely to the anchor. That’s the practice.
If it sounds simple, that’s because it is. But I wouldn’t say it’s easy! Mindfulness meditation is often challenging, yet always worth the effort. And if you haven’t yet checked it out for yourself, I encourage to work with some free guided mindfulness meditations with my friend Diana Winston. She’s wonderful.
But again, if you’re here reading this article, chances are good you’re looking for something…else.
What Is Cosmic Energy?
Cosmic energy is the fundamental component that forms and connects all things in existence.
The concept of cosmic energy is found in various spiritual and metaphysical traditions around the world. It is known by different names in different cultures, such as prana in Hinduism, qi (chi) in Chinese philosophy, mana in Polynesian traditions, and others. It’s possible you’ve heard it referred to as Divine Light, or shakti. While the specific terminology may differ, the essence remains the same: a vital force or energy that flows through the natural world and all things in it. Including us.
Cosmic energy is often seen as a subtle, invisible energy that is responsible for the creation, sustenance, and transformation of life. It is believed to be present everywhere, pervading all aspects of the universe, from the tiniest particles to the farthest and most vast expanse of space. It is considered to be an essential component of spiritual and energetic practices focused on the eternal nature of all existence.
Benefits include access to higher dimensions of consciousness. This access, with practice, can lead to sudden, deep insights, the development of transcendent emotional awareness, spiritual clairvoyance, development of the interplay between one’s subtle bodies, a daily experience of high interconnectedness, a deepening of one’s connection to nature, and others.
In various holistic and alternative healing modalities, such as Reiki, acupuncture, and pranic healing, practitioners work with the concept of cosmic energy to restore and harmonize the energetic balance within the body. They perceive imbalances in cosmic energy that surround or infuse an individual as resulting in physical, mental, and/or emotional ailments. By accessing and directing cosmic energy, these practices aim to promote healing, vitality, well-being, and spiritual growth.
While the existence and nature of cosmic energy are not scientifically proven, or even measurable by conventional means, the concept serves as a framework for understanding the interconnectedness of all things and the subtle energetic forces that permeate and influence life. It provides a lens through which individuals explore their spirituality, seek connection with themselves, with others and with the larger universe. It helps us tap into our own inner potential for growth and transformation.
To Perceive, Or Not to Perceive…
Cosmic energy permeates all life, whether one perceives it as physicalized or not. Someone else perceiving or not perceiving has no bearing its existence.
If you’ve never consciously had an experience of cosmic energy, or had even an inkling of its existence, it’s understandable that you could doubt its existence. Me saying that it’s real might make you curious, but it’s not as impactful as feeling it yourself.
On the other hand, if you do perceive it, however faintly or fleetingly, the disbelief of another person should have no impact on your experience. Just as there is no scientific proof that it exists, there is no proof of any kind that it does not.
One person’s inability to perceive it doesn’t make their experience more valid, or more true, than that of another person who does.
What Is Cosmic Energy Meditation?
Cosmic energy meditation is a practice that encourages self-discovery, inner healing, and spiritual growth by aligning oneself with the expansive and transformative power of cosmic energy. Many of its techniques employ visualization or even, especially when you’re first starting out, guided imagery meditation. The idea is to learn to open your perception beyond your five senses. Beyond even the sixth sense. Like, way beyond.
One of the core principles of cosmic energy meditation is to identify and explore the interconnectedness of all things. Altered consciousness is only the tip of the iceberg. This practice recognizes that everything in the universe is interconnected and that individuals are not merely separate entities but also each and all are integral parts of the cosmic whole. At its essence, cosmic energy meditation is the pursuit of universal truths about the events of existence, both visible and invisible.
As a result, while practitioners of cosmic energy meditation do typically experience tremendous personal transformation, the higher goal is to deepen the connection between their own spiritual essence and the universal Divine. To transform not only here and now, but eternally.
Think about that for a moment.
The goal isn’t to transform yourself merely in this lifetime, but through all lifetimes…past, present and future. Simultaneously in the sphere of time. And therefore eternally.
By building on this spiritual sense of eternal interconnectedness, cosmic energy meditation fosters an ever-expanding unfoldment of oneness with the cosmos. It invites individuals not to abandon their individuality, but to embrace it, while simultaneously recognizing that each of us is an expression of universal energy…the Divine Cosmos. And we each of us has work to do living this human life. In all our iterations, expressions, and encounters.
Spiritual awakening takes many forms, but all have one thing in common: the development of higher consciousness.
Yes, You Can Have It All
The beauty of mindfulness meditation is that it doesn’t require you to believe in anything spiritual or eternal. It’s helpful to literally anyone who engages it with sincerity and an openness to its challenges and benefits.
The beauty of cosmic energy meditation meditation is that nourishes the hearts and minds of those who do embrace the spiritual cosmos. It enriches their lives by allowing them to explore, in the here and now, aspects of themselves, others, and world that are both fleeting and forever.
Neither style is better. Both reap enormous benefits, And best of all, you don’t have to shun one because you engage the other. They do not have to be mutually exclusive practices or even mutually exclusive ways of looking at the world. They can and do compliment one another if you’re open to viewing them that way.
Human existence is both sublime and mundane, and however we transcend its limitations will bring greater happiness – both here and now, and beyond.
